I don’t eat meat, and after reading about protein requirements, I used the article’s calculator and was mortified to see I was struggling to get a paltry 30 grams/day. (Yikes. That’s about what an 80-lb woman needs.) I know whey is a quality source of protein, and I’d only used flavored powders in the past, and found them to be sickeningly sweet. So I thought I’d check out unflavored. Nutricost is a good brand, and reviews were good so I decided to try it, and ordered the 2-lb canister.

Was I pleasantly surprised! I got it mainly for smoothies and shakes. Since I eat a lot of protein-rich dairy, this works beautifully. There’s no flavor or grainy texture in my berry smoothie. (I must say, though, that I use a blender, so I don’t know about shaking alone.) The smoothie is thicker, but, again, no change in taste. I used the full scoop, too, which is about ⅓ cup. That’s a lot, so it really bumped up my smoothie protein from 11 to 36 grams. Very helpful.

I also add it to chocolate milk, but for that I use 3 TBSP. One tablespoon of the powder has about 4½ grams of protein, so 3 TBSP gives me an extra 13 or so grams, and that’s a total of about 21 for the chocolate milk.

I’ve also used it in soup. For this, I like the Tomato-Roasted Red Pepper soups that come in 32-oz tetrapaks. Here, I only use 2 TBSP of the protein powder because this soup already has 3-5 grams protein per 8 oz, depending on brand, and adding the powder bumps it up to around 12-14. I add about half of the 8 oz of soup that I plan to eat to a bowl, then stir in the powder, which mixes very easily. Then I add the remainder of the soup and microwave it for the desired amount of time. (If you do it stovetop, do the same thing in a pan before heating it.) Then I add garlic powder, black pepper, and Parmesan cheese. Very tasty! The trick is to mix in the powder *before* heating it. Just consider what happens to egg whites, which are all protein, when exposed to heat. They solidify. Which is great for eating eggs, but a solid glop isn’t what you want when you’re using powder.

I haven’t used this on oatmeal, though you could, because I don’t want to adulterate everything, and I already eat oatmeal that has 12 grams of protein. Same with coffee, because I already use collagen peptides for that.

Being able to add this to smoothies and shakes is just what I wanted so I’m very pleased at the product and the versatility of being able to use the full scoop or just a TBSP here and there. This product was not available locally in stores, so I’m grateful to have found it here on Amazon. Now that I know I like it, I’ll buy the economical 5-lb canister next time!

**UPDATE:** I ordered the 5-lb canister as I said I would, and I’m discovering more ways to use this.

First of all, I began using a shaker bottle (didn’t even need the ball) for my simple shakes, and the powder dissolves beautifully. For smoothies with bananas, assorted fruits, etc., I continue to use a blender.

I have to say, though I understand the eagerness of people to increase their protein intake, you have to be reasonable. For example, adding ⅓ of a cup of powder to soup, usually 8-10 oz, is unrealistic. Of *course* that’ll be a gloppy mess! Try using one or two tablespoons first, and be happy if you even found only one variety of soup that’s palatable.

As I mentioned above, this is pure protein, like egg whites, and *cannot* be added to hot liquids without tempering. It’s unrealistic to expect this to be equally palatable in everything. And there’s also no reason to use the full serving (⅓ cup) in everything. The beauty of this product is its versatility in being to add even a little to bump up the protein. Unless I’m making smoothies, I use less. Along with the provided ⅓ cup scoop, I placed a ⅛ cup (2 TBSP) scoop right in the canister.

Also, only the brave should be putting this in coffee lol. I use collagen peptides for that because, being hydrolyzed, it mixes perfectly with no taste or textural change.

Greek yogurt, BTW, is perfect for this protein powder. I mix 2 TBSP in a 5.3 oz container with a popsicle stick or plastic knife, and it’s delicious. Even here though, some flavors are better than others; try them out.

One reviewer was disenchanted because Nutricost doesn’t include the amino acid profile on the label. Don’t worry about it–but DO notice that on the label it states that one serving gives you 25 grams of protein,*which constitutes 46% of the DV* for that nutrient. U.S. labeling is very stringent (just consider the number of recalls due to incorrect labeling). The manufacturer would NOT be able to make that claim if all essential amino acids were not included. It’s not necessary to add to the cost by printing them all on the label.

And case in point: the collagen peptides I told you I use in my coffee? If you have any, check the label, or check next time you’re in the store (or even online). You’ll see 0% or dashes next to the DV for protein. That’s because collagen peptides, do NOT contain the essential amino acid, tryptophan. Even though peptides can count towards your protein goal, ON THEIR OWN (i.e., that serving) they’re incomplete, so the manufacturer cannot legally claim that it meets ANY standard per serving.

To sum up, if a label gives you a percentage DV of protein, you can be sure not only that all essential amino acids are included, but also that the required amount of each one is included. Trust the labeling, and do your homework!

And one more thing: The 5-lb canister is huge! I decided to fill my empty 2-lb canister with the powder, and use that daily, so that I can store the 5-lb canister in the back of the cabinet instead of lugging that out daily or keeping that huge thing on the counter. If you don’t like to reuse plastic, there are any number of glass jars you can buy that’ll hold a week’s worth (or whatever) of protein powder. Enjoy!

  4. My Favorites

This is one of those products we constantly reorder because it delivers consistent quality, great taste, and excellent value. We’ve been buying the Nutricost Whey Protein Concentrate (Chocolate) 5 lbs for a while now, and it’s become a staple in my husband’s nutrition routine.

First off, the quantity is outstanding. The 5‑pound size lasts a very long time—even with daily shakes—so it ends up being more cost‑effective than smaller tubs from other brands. For the quality you get, it’s one of the best values we’ve found.

The chocolate flavor is genuinely enjoyable and mixes well with both water and milk. We’ve tried other protein powders where the flavor is chalky or artificial, but this one tastes smooth and not overly sweet. It’s perfect for post‑workout shakes or even blended into smoothies.

Mixability is another plus—no clumps if you use a shaker bottle or blender. The texture stays smooth, and you don’t have to chase powder around the bottom of the cup. My husband especially appreciates that it doesn’t upset his stomach, which can happen with some other formulas.

Overall, this Nutricost whey protein concentrate has become a trusted go‑to for us. It’s reliable, enjoyable to drink, and lasts far longer than expected for a 5‑pound tub. If you’re looking for a solid, affordable whey protein that your family will actually use consistently, this is a great choice.

I have been using this for a few months already and really like it.

First off, unflavored is so much easier for me to drink – no cloying artificial extra-sweet flavors that get annoying after a week, like virtually every flavored whey protein.

I just throw it in a little blender with a small amount of milk (doesn’t taste as nice with water) and it’s ready, super easy to drink. Occasionally, I add a spoon of cocoa powder or a few frozen berries for flavor. You can of course add sugar if you want but the sweetness from milk is enough for me personally.

Being unflavored makes it also easy to add into recipes if needed.

I like this particular brand as there is nothing extra added, seems good quality, and is priced fairly.

First of all, the price is amazing! I got the unflavored version to avoid all of the sweeteners and extras that I don’t want. Kinda has a hint of vanilla, otherwise not much flavor. Dissolves easily in water. Just mix it with a spoon. Feels like a quality product. I usually mix it in a cup of water with other powders like creatine and such and drink it all in one go…

I like the taste of this a lot. Mixed with about 8oz of water makes a nice thick “shake”. My only complaint is it’s a bit chunky. It’s not intolerable but a bit off putting. Good combination of quantity, serving size, grams of protein and price. I’ve had some stomach issues with some of the other brands but so far this has been fine.

Vanilla tastes great! I do a scoop of this, a scoop of Plenny powder (rotating flavors), and 300mL of 1% milk. In an IceShaker. That is my breakfast, the Nutricost vanilla protein powder makes it taste much better than just Plenny Powder.

I’ve been using protein powders for about 20 years, and I’ve tried many brands in my time. I usually use vanilla flavored protein, as that flavor tends to compliment just about every other type of flavor one would mix it with. Since a lot of my regular protein brands have jumped up in price severely, I figured I’d give this one a shot and see how it was.
When it comes to taste, this brand’s vanilla flavor has a distinct buttery overtone that can be hit or miss, depending on how one is planning to use it. For baking (Yes, try baking with whey powder to boost up the protein content of muffins or whatever), this might be a real win! Most vanilla flavored protein won’t add much sweetness to things, but it will contribute to the overall result in terms of flavor (for better or worse). For my preferences, the flavor detracts from how I use it. I’m prefer a much more straightforward vanilla flavor, and the buttery flavors just throw me off. You might personally like that, and if so, then this is the protein for you!
Another small gripe is that when I mix this with my shaker in my post-workout concoction, it tends to foam up A LOT. I attribute this to the fact that all the protein in this is whey CONCENTRATE, and not a mix of isolate AND concentrate, which is what I’m used to. No matter what, protein is protein, and whether it’s concentrate or isolate, the protein amount and quality is the same in the end. The difference is that isolate is approximately (by volume) 90% protein and concentrate is approximately 79% protein, which means that there’s a bit more of the other components of the milk that the whey originally came from that are present. A bit more fat, sodium, and cholesterol will be in it, but a far smaller amount than whole milk, of course. All this to say that when I mix my shake, I have to let it sit on the counter undisturbed for over 10 minutes just to get the foam to decrease and become somewhat drinkable. It still has a lot of foam after that, but at least it’s not an overwhelming amount at that point.
In conclusion, I think this protein is a price conscious smart buy, assuming the cost (about $56 a lbs at the time of writing this) stays relatively the same. I like the consistency of the dry powder, as it’s a satisfying granular texture vs the flour-like texture I’m used to with the isolate dominant varieties I normally consume. The buttery taste is ok, but the foaming really gets to me. It’s such an annoyance that I’ll probably keep searching for a similarly priced product that won’t foam as much after mixing. If you’re OK with a little extra foam and a buttery vanilla flavor, then this is right for you.

Relatively low calories (130) and decent amount of protein (25g). I prefer the Vanilla flavor and I mix it in a shaker bottle with several ice cubes and either water or even orange juice. Fully dissolves with no powdery residue. I try to use it a minimum of twice a day to boost my protein intake. Nutricost products never disappoint!

I like the macros and ingredients and cost but not a fan of the vanilla taste. Its not horrible. But its too sweet for my taste. And though I prefer Raw BUM vanilla whey much better, its almost 2x as much as this brand. So I’ll try to finish out the 2 lb and see if the taste grows on me. 😀

Taste great and mixes well. No complaints with the flavor. Very versatile with flavor combinations. Easy to digest not hard on the stomach. Scoop size isn’t too off from the suggested serving size. I usually measure good idea with this one.

Great protein supplement that i drink with water and tastes great. I do mix with warm water and add ice sometimes to enhance the flavor. In 5 months im almost on my third tub. Used to fuel my strength training and meet protein goals for weight loss. Could barely do 185lbs on bench 5 months ago and can now do 225x5x5 on flat barbell bench. But thats from being almost 100kg bw and having lifted many years ago so i know what im doing. I just like the flavor and its not even 200 calories for 25g of protein per scoop. I would not do more thab 2 scoops a day though, eat plenty of chicken.
