I have wanted this type of ice forever. My hubby got it for me for Christmas. Great price but absolutely wonderful ice!! I did get the extra tank so we are never without ice. It very quiet and the sanitizing button helps keep it going. Size: it is worth the bulky size because I have amazing ice. 🧊 my friend recommended it and I now recommend it. Happy Crunching!

We were very excited about this ice machine. We followed the setup instructions exactly and used only filtered water (no hard water). For the first day or two, it seemed to work great, but by day three it began making an extremely loud, high-pitched noise. Now on day five, it randomly emits this piercing sound that continues indefinitely until we turn the machine off.

Update: For anyone who experienced the machine screaming, we determined through trial and error that the issue was an air bubble in the tube feeding water from the reservoir tank, which prevented the water from being drawn properly. Fully draining the tube and reattaching it resolved the problem, and the water then pulled from the reservoir as intended.

Great countertop soft nugget ice maker. Quiet and efficient. Makes quite a bit of ice quickly. Needs draining and cleaning every few weeks, but not a big task.

If you crave that soft, chewable Chick-fil-A style ice at home, this ice maker hands down is the best countertop nugget ice maker out there. It pumps out perfect pebble-sized nuggets that crunch just like Chic Filt it’s cloudy, airy, and super refreshing in iced tea or cocktails. Setup was a breeze, and it makes a full bin in about 20 minutes without any weird tastes or melting mess. Quiet, sleek on the counter, and worth every penny for daily use. My drinks have never been better!!!!

I love this ice machine!!!! It’s best to use purified water with it, and be prepared to do some cleaning cycles twice a month. Locating it close to a sink makes it super quick and easy to clean (the machine cleans its self, but you need to dump and empty water in it). If you don’t mind cycling water through it twice a month, be prepared to enjoy the best ice of your life. 🙂

If I could pick 3.5 instead of 3, I would. I like the ice machine (have owned it a bit over a week so far), but… there are two main issues that I haven’t seen others bring up in reviews — aside from the noise itself, which is annoying but you can probably get used to it.

    My two main concerns:

    1. The unit has no way, either on the device or through the app (AFAICT, anyway) to tell it “stop making ice right now”. It will cycle on when it thinks it’s time to make ice, and you can’t say “no, please don’t right now, try again later”. You might be doing that because you don’t want the noise at that time… or maybe you just think there’s plenty of ice and/or you don’t want to refill the water at that point. Anyway… you want to stop it? The only way is to turn the unit off. But that’s not good. Turning it off means it won’t turn on and try again later. It will just stay off. And also, I *think* being off actually stopped the refrigeration too, so the ice already made melted. Not good. You really should be able to just interrupt/pause the ice making cycle easily, while keeping the unit otherwise on and in normal mode.

    2. This one is a HUGE miss in my opinion: the ice drawer is a little too easy to accidentally leave partially ajar, but there’s NO alarm (light, noise, anything) on the unit to tell you that, nor does the app alert you. Even the most basic refrigerators out there have a door open alarm if you leave it too long. I cannot believe this unit doesn’t have something like that, especially given that it’s a the ultra 2.0 top of the line device. A “drawer open alarm” is not optional IMO, it’s minimum expected. Shocked it’s not on here.

This is my 2nd attempt to owning one of these ice makers. The first just didn’t work or make any ice. This 2.0 version had me very hopeful but the whining noise was just too much to handle. I did call ge tech support and I repeated all the set up steps of sanitizing and rinsing the unit only to continue with the whining. This unit did make the ice but after 2 attempts I’m done. Just not worth the hassle or cost in the long run.

So far, we couldn’t be more pleased. It is a sizable unit so if you have a compact kitchen not necessarily the best choice but it appears well made and has been working great so far. These do require regular maintenance so get used to set up a regular routine to do this.

Our last Opal worked for about 9 years before it became so calcified it wasn’t edible. We stuck with the Opal brand for our replacement. Love the cleaning features, so hopefully that will help with the calcification, but even if it doesn’t- I definitely feel like we got our money’s worth from the first one. This one is super easy to set up and the ice is awesome! An office favorite!

Bought a second one and this in came with the scoop holder (had to order a scoop holder for my existing Opal nugget ice maker) and a filter. My original works like a champ and now I added the filter to it as well to help combat the scape from my hard water. This one replaced the cheaper nugget ice maker that started not producing ice as it should. They are both household necessities at this point in my home! Sleek, and quiet operations. You do have to descale it every 3 to 6 months, but a small price to pay in time for the quality of ice it produces.

    Greetings

This is our THIRD Opal in 5 years plus. The last one was moaning after 3 years and even though it was descaled often my wife said just buy a new one.

We are addicted to the ice, we use it every day multiple times. It is awesome.

The latest version of this has WiFi and far more reminders to descale the unit constantly, I think GE understands that this has to be maintained and descaled often.

You cannot be lazy and expect this unit to last, period. trust me we have bought 3, the first one descaling was barely mentioned in the documentation now in version 3 it even has stickers and it’s own manual.

The descaling solution has changed from a liquid to a powder.

The filter is the same but a new color.

It is quiet for the most part. It produces a LOT of ice and will always be ready. I refill the extra water container every day.

It is easy to use and very chewable.

The weight of this bad. boy needs to be on a countertop but not so much you cannot move it for the descaling…I have to move it to the sink for draining.

Remember, descale every 3 weeks, I live in Southern California and use filtered water but still will descale every 3-4 weeks tops.

I recommend this obviously as I have bought it 3 times and will eventually buy a 4th…hopefully in 3 years plus! 🙂

I only had this ice maker for about 2 weeks. Within a day of plugging it in and making ice, it started making a horrendously loud noise at least once a day. Although I loved the IDEA of this ice maker and did enjoy the ice it made while I had it, the horrendous noise it made was a deal breaker–not to mention what unknown issue was CAUSING the noise! Would the source of the noise eventually cause the ice maker to wind up catching fire in the middle of the night or during the day while I was at work? It just wasn’t worth taking that chance, so I returned it. GE seems to have a quality issue with this ice maker and though other consumers may have gotten lucky that they haven’t experienced this, unfortunately, I can’t recommend this ice maker–even if I wish I could.

I didn’t want to love this nugget icemaker. It’s insanely expensive and it’s HUGE, literally almost as big as my microwave. I’d been eyeing it for years (literally), as GE upgraded its features and glowing reviews multiplied online, but I couldn’t bear the price and inevitably ended up buying less expensive (though still pricey) machines by Whynter & Gevi. Both machines made good “sonic” ice, were relatively quiet, had self-cleaning modes… and died within the year.
(* The Whynter is a remarkably & uniquely low-profile size, but the Gevi is almost as big as the Opal).

I’m in Colorado, where the water is very hard, so I cleaned the machines religiously and used filtered/purified water (which got expensive, off-setting the cheaper upfront cost), but the ice still started to taste bad over time, long before the machines grinded to a stop. I actually bought insurance on the Whynter, anticipating the short lifespan after the Gevi croaked, but when it took weeks to jump through all the hoops and file a claim, I decided to try out this premium Opal. What a difference!

This nugget icemaker IS expensive AND huge- but it’s awesome. The nugget ice is perfect and the ice bin is so big. I got the side tank, but I don’t really need it, the main water reservoir is plenty to fill the large ice bin. But best of all, the ice tastes great! I only drink bottled water and with the other machines, I had to make sure it was cold when pouring it over ice or it would melt the ice and taste bad. No amount of cleaning/descaling helped and I was left dumping out gallons of bottled water because the ice had melted and the water was undrinkable. Not the case with this machine! The internal filter makes a huge difference and I use regular tap water to fill it. Even when the ice melts entirely, the water still tastes like bottled water. Total game-changer.

Worth the price and the counter space.

This is a nice well made icemaker. Reserve barely holds enough ice for 4 glasses.
Be prepared for a lot of regular maintenance. The unit is quite heavy and due to length of hoses it has to rotated to do maintenance. Apart from descaling (every 1-2 months) you’ll also have to Sanitize it weekly. Both of these require draining and refilling ice maker several times.
The ice is great, very chewable, and the unit looks nice and appears to be well made. But it’s a lot of work. I may try to figure out a way to extend hoses, that would make maintenance much easier.

My favorite part is the scooper holder is magnetic. It had ice ready for me in about 20 minutes. I ran the self cleaner twice and ran great instructions were very easy. Great buy!

I honestly wouldn’t buy one of these. The ice is incredible and the idea is great. But the machine is terrible. Mine died about six weeks after I bought it. Just stop making ice. Of course the return period on Amazon is one month or less. Had to play a terrible game with GE to get them to return it. Once I return it, they didn’t respond for over a week. I had to email them again to get them to recognize that I had sent the icemaker to them and then they said they would ship it to me within the week. It’s been over a week and I still haven’t received it. So I am three months into having an icemaker that I’ve used for six weeks. They made sure to let me know that the warranty period is not extended based on the fact that I haven’t had the icemaker. I’ve bought one of these before and it also had an unfortunate ending. Also, these machines are very labor-intensive as far as keeping them clean and running. If you don’t clean it regularly, you will get mold. Certainly not worth money..
